Yorkshire-based composer and pianist DAVID NELSON is as equally at home with classical playing as with rock, world music, jazz and other forms of improvisation.

These opposite ends of the musical spectrum combine to fuel his creative juices and seem to pervade every aspect of his musicianship. He has taught piano, music theory and composition for the last 25 years and is well known for both his classical playing and his work with world-jazz fusion ensembles Gongfusion, Tongue & Groove and the Ruby Wood/Dave Nelson Quintet. He is also a director and the music co-ordinator of the Hebden Bridge Arts Festival in Yorkshire.

David has been a music workshop practitioner since 1988. He specialises in improvisation and composition within ensemble playing, and has considerable experience of working in all types of school, and with children (and adults) of every age and ability. As well as delivering workshops, Dave is also involved with project design and management, particularly for Yorkshire Youth and Music on whose behalf he is also a mentor and tutor on CPD courses for fellow professionals.
David was invited to teach piano improvisation at Castelfranc in 2005 having been a participant at the Summer School since 2003. He runs daily warm-ups and improvisation games as well as the improvisation workshops, and is always on hand to play for late night singalongs! He is currently completing a book based on his work at Castelfranc and elsewhere.
