MUSIC AT CASTELFRANC
FREQUENTLY ASKED
QUESTIONS
Q: HOW DO I PAY?
A: PayPal is the easiest method for overseas participants: you are sent an invoice in sterling via PayPal, who automatically convert the amount into your own currency once you follow the easy instructions. This is absolutely secure, though the disadvantage is it costs an extra 4%, which we are charged by PayPal for every payment received. If you wish to pay by this method tell us at once. We collect the 4% when you arrive in France.
Otherwise we do not take currencies other than sterling or euros. Overseas participants can pay by sterling bank draft, sterling travellers' cheques, or a sterling or euros transfer directly into our account, details of which we can send upon enquiry.
Q: What standard must I be to attend the course?
A: For the Intermediate Class we do not stipulate a minimum standard. Enthusiasm
for the piano and its repertoire is all that’s required. The atmosphere
is extremely supportive, and even the most reluctant, rusty or nervous players
usually feel inspired to contribute. The Advanced Class, however, operates
at conservatoire level. Some quite proficient pianists feel happier in the
Intermediate Class; others enjoy the challenge of the Advanced Class. Occasionally,
depending on numbers and the differing standards of participants, the Intermediate
Class is divided into two streams. Those unsure which side of the divide they
fall should email Paul Roberts at the castelfranc address – info@castelfranc.com – with
details of their current level and repertoire. He will be happy to advise.
Q: Do I have to audition?
A: No, though as numbers for the Advanced Class are small we choose participants from their CVs and through recommendation.
Q: Can other instrumentalists attend?
A: Most certainly. In previous years we have often had duos and chamber groups
participating in the classes.
Q: What is the usual age range?
A: The age range on a single course can be 16 to 76 and rising. Generally 18-25
year-olds predominate in the advanced class, though it frequently contains
a few older participants too. The intermediate class is always a mix of ages.
Q: How is the day organised and how long are the classes?
A: There is at least one three-hour class each day for both Advanced and Intermediate
levels; extra sessions are slotted in if required, depending on work in progress.
Breakfast begins at 8.00, followed by practice and preparation; at 10.00 everyone
meets for a warm up session, simple improvisation and exercise; at 10.30 the
classes begin. Afternoons are for relaxation or practising; there is usually
another class between 4.00 and 7.00 in the evening. After 7.00 pm we ask for
complete silence from all piano playing – drinks are served out-of-doors,
with dinner at 8.00 followed by various musical and theatrical offerings.
Q: How much opportunity is there to practise?
A: Plenty. Practice pianos – a choice of uprights, two grands, and this
year several digital instruments are ranged around the property and can be
booked in hourly slots. Apart from during the evening curfew after 7.00 you
can practise when you like. Most participants find they can easily fit at least
two hours a day between classes and other activities.
Q: Is board and lodging included in the price?
A: Fees are inclusive of all classes, concerts, meals and use of practice facilities,
and range from between less than £500 to more than £900 depending on the type of accommodation
you choose (see Fees & Accommodation). Evening bar drinks are extra,
though wine is gratis with the evening meal. Pick-ups to and from stations
or airports are charged according to distance (the Castelfranc to Castres journey is 10€ one way).
Q: My family has a holiday house nearby. Can I attend the course and live
out?
A: Yes. Those who choose to live out will be charged the camping rate (under £500)
which offers them the full course minus the bed.
Q: Can I bring my wife/husband/partner/non piano-playing friend?
A: Yes – and we offer them a 10% discount. Whether they choose
to attend the classes and concerts, or use the chateau as a base for sight-seeing,
cycling, hiking etc, is up to them.
Q: In which language are the classes held?
A: English, though the tutors generally have French for use if needed.
Q: Do you run any similar courses in the UK?
A: Yes, weekend courses in East Sussex with Paul Roberts, including workshops and an evening recital. Details can be found at PaulRobertsPiano.com, or e mail info@castelfranc.com and mark your e mail Week End Courses.
